Sex and the City stylist Patricia Field says the Prime Minister has let himself go

'David Cameron looks a fat mess'

She's helped turn actresses like Sarah Jessica Parker and Anne Hathaway into style icons and now stylist Patricia Field thinks David Cameron could do with some sprucing up.
In the past she has been known to spark controversy with her remarks - most recently she defended John Galliano's anti-semitic tirade - and now the fashion mogul has slammed the British Prime Minister's appearance.
This year David Cameron came number 20 on GQ's most stylish men in Britain list, beating the likes of actor Ben Barnes and Prince William, but this failed to impress Field.

The New Yorker launched an attack on Cameron saying that he had let his physique go over recent years, failing to inspire the British public to lead a healthier lifestyle.
'He used to be, you know, good-looking; he looks fat now. He must have put on about 40, 50 pounds, that guy; he looks a mess!
'And that is not good because he’s supposed to be an example for people. He’s just globbing up food: he’s gotten so fat, it’s really bad.' She told the Independent.

But Cameron is not the only one that needs her help. According to Field Michelle Obama could also do with some guidance.
The First Lady was recently named in Vanity Fair's international best dressed list and the clothes she's pictured in regularly sell out as women try to emulate her look. But Field thinks she can help 47-year-old look even better.
In an interview with the MailOnline, she said: 'Someone in the public eye who I would like to work with is Michelle Obama. Not because she always gets it wrong, because she gets it right. She dresses very nicely, I respect her look, but when it comes to her special occasion clothes, I might be able to help her a bit, out of respect to her.
'I think I could enhance what she’s already doing, especially when it comes to special occasions.'

But the Sex and the City costume designer admits one person who doesn't need her advice is Victoria Beckham.
'She's my style icon because she’s someone who owns her style. She has a signature look. You know it, you see it, you identify with it, and she owns it. It’s original, it’s hers.'
She also added that another Brit, the Duchess of Cambridge, has fantastic fashion sense.
'I like her style very much, she has confidence, she has taste. Her wedding gown was modern and beautiful. I think she is a very good addition to the Royal Family.'
Field, who has won Emmy awards for her costume designs and worked on films like The Devil Wears Prada, is based in New York but has been in the UK to share her style tips after being appointed as brand ambassador for Lenor Infusions fabric conditioners.

She describes her own style as 'expressive and personal' and says anyone can look good regardless of their age and finances if they have confidence and take the time to work out what suits them.
'There is no law on dressing to a certain formula,' she said. 'Sometimes it just requires a bit more time and thought. It might mean going through your closet and trying different combinations on and seeing how that works out.'
Field has had a long-standing career in fashion and believes she was the first to invent leggings in 1978. But it was with the Sex and the City TV series that her fame really took off.
She dressed the characters Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte (played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis respectively), so well that what they were wearing became as interesting to viewers as their entangled love lives.
Field said working with the actresses on the show was a delight. 'I worked with them ongoing for years and we were like a family by the end. I knew their individual styles, they were all very different girls.'

She revealed SJP's character Carrie, who wasn't afraid to wear loud and outlandish clothes whatever the occasion, was by far the most fun to work on. But she admitted she can't take all the credit as getting the character right was a joint effort between her and the actress.
'Sarah Jessica Parker is fun to dress and she’s like a little doll, you can put anything on her and she makes it look good,' she said. 'The process of Carrie was contributed to by both Sarah Jessica and me. We created Carrie together. She couldn’t have done it without me and I couldn’t have done it without her. Carrie was our child.'
Field went onto work on two Sex and the City films but wasn't fazed by some of the poor reviews they were given by critics.

'From a wardrobe point of view it was well-received, the second one even more than the first. That’s my job, I choose clothes. I had a lot of fun doing the second one. All the criticism of that film was about the story and I didn’t write the story.'
She added that whether she ever worked on a third film in the franchise would 'depend on what the script was about and if I felt inspired to do it'.
And despite rumours of a prequel being made, she said she is not currently aware of any plans for another film.
'It’s a possibility for the future but I am not part of that negotiation and decision making. If they decide to do a movie, I’ll hear about it if they call me and they want to offer me the job.'
