Jennifer Lopez's tears for Stefano Langone as he is the sixth contestant to be booted off American Idol

Jennifer Lopez got her wish last night when one of the last remaining female contestants, Haley Reinhart, was saved.

But that didn't stop the 41-year-old struggling to fight back tears as wild card contestant Stefano Langone got eliminated from the reality show last night.

The diva was left clearly saddened as she watched the 22-year-old give his goodbye performance at the end of the results show.

Tears welling up in her eyes, Jennifer showed that she was getting attached to the final handful of contestants left in the reality show.

Lopez was not the only person who looked sad to see Langone voted off the singing competition.

Contestant James Durbin was caught on camera holding his head in his hands and shedding tears as host Ryan Seacrest read out the results of the public vote.

Durbin, who has become close friends with Langone over the last few weeks, then picked his pal up after his final performance of Stevie Wonder classic Lately.

More than 52 million people voted to save their favourite contestants as the American Idol top seven was whittled down to just six people.

Lopez had said 'I hope it's not a girl', this week after seeing Idol favourite Pia Toscano getting voted off last week, whittling the female contestants down to just Haley Reinhart and Lauren Alaina.

Langone stood with his head bowed after learning his fate, but took the news in good spirits.

'It's started my career, man, and you can't put a price on that,' he said, speaking about his time on Idol. 'I'm so blessed. I came so far and it's great.'

Casey Abrams, James Durbin, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina join Lusk and Reinhart in the remaining top six contestants.

Durbin, 22, revealed that he had even received a congratulatory e-mail from Muse frontman Matt Bellamy after his performance of their hit song Uprising.

'Matt Bellamy from Muse said 'Wow, great job',' he said. 'He was just really impressed. He loved my vision for it and I'm absolutely stoked.'

Abrams, meanwhile, claimed his much talked about performance, which saw him kiss Lopez on the cheek, had been a spur of the moment decision.

'I was just going to breathe in her face but then she gave me an opening,' he told Seacrest.

Looking alarmed, Lopez stuttered 'I liked the kiss better' and revealed that her husband, Marc Anthony, had taken it well.

'Marc was like 'That was a cute moment',' she laughed.

Seacrest also asked judge Steven Tyler about his outburst on Wednesday night's show, which saw him drop the F-bomb on live television.

'I'm going to give Trey, the editor back there, something to worry about,' he joked.

'After all, what the?' he added, grinning as he stopped before finishing the sentence.

Last night's results show saw Alaina, Reinhart, Langone and Lusk team up to perform Hey Soul Sister by Train.

Abrams, McCreery and Durbin, meanwhile, took on Coldplay's Viva La Vida.

There were also live performances from former Idol contestant David Cook, who sang new single The Last Goodbye, and Katy Perry, who was joined on stage by Kanye West to perform her hit songE.T.

Before the results were read out, the contestants were shown visiting a spa, having facials and manicures.
