Duchess wears non-British designer for the first time on Royal tour, Kate wears all Danish Fashion

The Duchess of Cambridge's diplomatic fashion choices, carefully referencing both the UK and Canada, have won her high praise from style experts. So it came as some surprise today to see her in a dress by Copenhagen-based label By Malene Birger.
There is no doubt that the cream silk-linen dress was a fine choice for the 29-year-old. With its structured shoulder, three-quarter-length sleeves and taupe band at the waist, it looked smart and elegant.

Great Dane: The Duchess of Cambridge surprised fashion watchers at Yellowknife, Canada, today when she stepped out in a dress by Copenhagen-based By Malene Birger instead of a British label
She teamed it with her favourite nude patent LK Bennett platform courts and a co-coordinating cream clutch bag.

But given that the usual form for a visiting dignitary's wife when on an official visit is to either show support for one's own native designers, or the host country's, it represents a departure from her usual shortlist of British-based favourites.
Erdem, which she has been seen wearing twice on the Royal tour so far, is a clever choice referencing both Britain and Canada as designer Erdem Moralioglu was born in Montreal, but founded and runs his label in London.

Other style choices have served a different purpose, her decision to wear Catherine Walker on Sunday, a tribute to her husband's late mother, and her recycling of the Reiss dress from her engagement portrait, a nod to the Queen.
Indeed, while Catherine regularly wears pieces from Spanish High Street chain Zara, the rest of her wardrobe is strictly British, and she has never been seen in a designer label from a foreign brand.
Should anyone find fault with the Duchess's decision to choose a non-British or Canadian label, one person who would be likely to come to her defence is Michelle Obama.

The U.S. First Lady sparked outrage when she wore an Alexander McQueen gown to a State dinner to promote American-Chinese trade in January, rather than a dress by an American designer.
Speaking about the public response in an interview with Good Morning America, the First Lady said: 'Look, women, wear what you love.
'That's all I can say. That's my motto. I wear what I like because...I gotta be in the dress, so...'
