But even though he has been dressed as a human piñata and slipped into a long blonde wig, it was a decidedly simpler outfit that left Jim Carrey looking rather creepy on set this week.
The actor was photographed wearing a deep purple dressing gown and some slouchy grey slipper boots as he shot scenes in downtown Los Angeles.
And the star, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday, appeared to be immersed in his character as he strutted down the street with a devilish look on his face.
He is sporting long locks, which on this occasion were tied into a ponytail, and a goatee, for his role in the highly anticipated comedy film.
As well as his bathrobe and boots, Carrey was adorned with lots of chunky jewellery, including rings on each of his fingers.
He plays a rival magician to the protagonist of the movie, played by The Office star Steve Carell.
Also filming scenes for the movie was actress Olivia Wilde, who plays Burt Wonderstone’s assistant in the movie, which is due to be released next year.
The 27-year-old was seen taking a break from shooting and refuelling with a cup of coffee.
Last week Carrey was visited on the set of the movie by his 24-year-old daughter Jane.
The youngster seems set to follow in the footsteps of her famous father after appearing as a contestant on the current season of American Idol.
The waitress made it through to the second round of auditions after performing for judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson on the show, which aims to find the next big American pop star.
She said of her famous family: ‘The last name definitely helps and hurts, I feel like there's kind of this pressure to maybe be better, because if I make it somewhere, I run the risk of people saying "Oh you only got there because of this.”’
After learning she had made it through to the next stage Jane called her father to tell him the good news.
He congratulated her and told host Ryan Seacrest: 'She’s so wonderful, she’s amazing I can’t wait for the world to understand what she has. Way to go. Oh my god this is going to be an exciting year.'
