Fashion's equivalent of the Oscars — the annual ball held in aid of the Costume Institute at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (and the reason fashion folk get out of bed every morning) — paid tribute this week to the work of the late British designer Alexander McQueen.
It also launched an exhibition of his key pieces. Bathed in the glow of that Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen Royal Wedding dress, the night was a spectacular tribute to British fashion.
Here, we present the most ravishing dresses in patriotic red, white and blue — and the most ridiculous...
Supermodel Gisele's scarlet strapless dress proves McQueen could do red carpet like no other; right, model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley goes for overtly sexy in Christopher Bailey
Jennifer Lopez looked stunning in red Grecian Gucci - love the severe hair and floral shrug; right, this Proenza Schouler halterneck showed a newfound maturity for Twilight star Kristen Stewart
I don't often say 'Wow' but I did for Gwyneth Paltrow in liquid Stella McCartney
Fergie - no, not the formerly Royal One - of the Black Eyed Peas, in rather bridal Marchesa
Sarah Jessica Parker in an autumn collection McQueen. I love that it's so demure
Salma Hayek chose draped sheer chiffon by McQueen, with a clutch bag by the designer - this gown proves that he could dress women with curves; right, model Miranda Kerr turned heads in a short gown by Marchesa, but it was too 'little girl' for my taste
Madonna loved McQueen, but chose slim-fitting Stella McCartney. Still, at least the material girl wasn't bursting out all over as usual; right, actress Isla Fisher wowed in a rather snug strapless blue Tony Burch
Eva Mendes looked absolutely beautiful in one-shouldered Stella McCartney, with contrasting faux leather belt; right, Nancy Shevell wore a one-shouldered column with a rock star (Paul McCartney) - this season's must have accessory
But what WERE these stars thinking?
Beyonce's hour-glass, Pucci embroidered gown with strange lacy nipples did her no favours
Naomi Campbell was overwhelmed in this far too fussy Grecian gown by McQueen
Christina Ricci's tiny waist looks bizarre in this Zac Posen spider's web
Over-busy Carolina Herrera swamps Christina Hendricks’ knockout figure; right, Iman in a jumpsuit by Stella McCartney - with matching golden hair
In case you missed it, here is THAT dress
Classic British fashion: The Duchess of Cambridge's Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen Royal Wedding dress that inspired the stars
