Any woman will tell you that when
you’re choosing an outfit for a big night out, it’s important to examine
how it looks from all angles. But it seems Gwyneth Paltrow forgot to perform that crucial twirl in front of the mirror.
Either that or she she was in a particularly risque mood in her selection of this satin mini-dress which, from the side, left remarkably little to the imagination.
Even Sir Mick Jagger seemed careful not to get close enough to disrupt Miss Paltrow’s dress as he greeted her with an awkward kiss on the cheek.
At an event better known for full-length evening dresses and flowing ballgowns, the mother of two turned heads in the lilac Prada dress, which showed off the results of her strict macrobiotic diet and exercise regime.
With her muscular back and toned legs
on display, she completed the look by sweeping her hair up into a bun
and adding metallic accessories, including jewelled grey peep-toe
stilettos and a copper satin clutch bag.
The outfit divided opinion on Twitter, with one observer writing: ‘Oh Gwyneth! I don’t think you are young or edgy enough [for that] mullet dress. BIG NO.’ But another said: ‘As much as Gwyneth Paltrow’s dress is totally unsuitable for a woman of her age, she looked amazing.’
The Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Benefit Gala, hosted by American Vogue editor Anna Wintour, is one of the most high-profile events in New York’s fashion calendar.
Gwyneth posed with friend Amanda De Cadenet and designer Diane von Furstenberg.
De Cadenet, also 39, threw a dinner to promote her new series The Conversation, which is executive produced by Demi Moore, 49.
At the dinner, Gwyneth was asked who she would like to have a conversation with, and answered rather boringly, her husband Chris Martin, 34 , of the band Coldplay.
She said: 'My husband. It would be really cool. I'd ask him a bunch of questions.'
The fete was thrown in conjunction with designer Diane von Furstenberg and was held at the designer's downtown studio.
'Amanda and I are old friends. We met probably like in 1993 and stayed in touch,' said Paltrow. 'In the last 10 years, we became really close friends.'
