He sensationally dumped her from the U.S. X Factor last year, but Simon Cowell is said to be making a swoop for Cheryl Cole to return to the show's British incarnation.
The Newcastle-born singer, 28, is now his number one target to replace Kelly Rowland, according to reports.
Cowell's move comes right after almost the entire team from the U.S. show was axed with host Steve Jones and judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul all given their marching orders last week.
A source close to Simon claimed in the Daily Mirror: 'Cheryl is part of The X Factor family. Formal discussions have yet to take place but if she wants to come back she would be welcomed with open arms.'
However a spokesperson for Syco dismissed the report saying: 'This is all total speculation.'
Cheryl was left red-faced when she was dropped from the U.S. X Factor in May last year after what was supposedly her big move to the States.
But the move became a living nightmare as the Girls Aloud star was replaced as a judge by Nicole Scherzinger, who had been due to be a co-host on the series with Welsh hunk Steve Jones.
Later Simon was questioned about Cheryl's departure by Piers Morgan on his chat show.
The music mogul explained that Cole had looked 'bewildered' during filming and hadn't adjusted to life in America as well as he'd hoped.
In September last year Simon told Piers: 'Not everyone's like you Piers. You come to a country like America, it's a big deal – it takes a while to adjust and I took the view along with a few other people that she would be more comfortable back in the UK.'
Simon and Cheryl eventually made up last year after the singer flew a cheeky banner past his birthday party teasing him for turning 52.
Last month, Cowell said the UK panel of Kelly Rowland, Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow and Tulisa Contostavlos had not been bold enough during the show's last run.
Now ITV chiefs are said to be bracing themselves to find out who he wants to fire – and of course hire.
And they've apparently made Simon they won’t oppose a Cheryl comeback.
An insider apparently said: 'We’d welcome her with open arms. She was hugely popular and she’s totally gorgeous. We’d love to have her back.'
