Emma Stone's Giambattista Valli couture gown on the Academy Awards red carpet last night was a brave choice.
Not only was the bright cerise hue a risk for a redhead (that, incidentally, she pulls off) but the silhouette, with its statement bow at the neck is one we've seen before, as Nicole Kidman wore a remarkably similar gown to the Oscars in 2007.
The two dresses are by no means identical - the Australian actress's gown was Balenciaga, and too different a cut and shade for the Valli creation to be branded a copy.
But one cannot ignore the likeness of the necklines - that divided opinions of style commentators both then and now.
While the Daily Beast's Robin Givhan deemed Miss Stone 'regal and glamorous', the New York Daily News placed her on its worst-dressed list.
The paper's review read: 'Looks like this Giambattista Valli Louis red bow is wearing an Emma Stone!'
It also helps that the two actresses are alike themselves to a degree. Both tall with a slender, boyish frame with naturally red hair - though Ms Kidman's was dyed blonde back in 2007.
Miss Stone's dress also bore a likeness to the Gucci creation that Jennifer Lopez wore to last year's Met Gala.
Perhaps thanks to the fact that the singer's neck tie was more understated, and offset by a dramatic floral ruffle at the shoulders, it was hailed a sartorial hit.
Indeed the gown, from Frida Giannini's fall/winter 2011 collection, which was inspired by the Seventies aesthetic of Florence Welch, was probably one of the best of her career.
Miss Stone may not have won such plaudits for last night's look, but she deserves praise for not playing it too safe.
Her sartorial instincts mean she is fast emerging as a face to watch on the red carpet, and Giambattista Valli was her choice for several press junkets ahead of the release of her breakout movie, The Help.
