Now it has been announced that the controversial Philip Treacy creation will be auctioned off for charity.
In an appearance on the The Oprah Winfrey Show, broadcast this week Beatrice's mother, Sarah Ferguson announced that the 22-year-old will be posting the headpiece on eBay.
As the world assessed the Royal Wedding fashion highs and lows Princess Beatrice and Eugenie were slammed for their choice of outfits.
Beatrice opted for a dusty pink Valentino Couture creation while her younger sister Eugenie, went for a figure hugging Vivienne Westwood design, however it was the bizarre hat that blew spectators away.
Beatrice's mother, Sarah Ferguson, who gave a revealing interview on American television said: 'She's putting it up on eBay to auction it for UNICEF and for children in crisis.'
Many will be led to believe that the young Princess's decision to sell the headpiece is a result of the negative commentary, but she staunchly defended the accessory in a recent Grazia interview.
She said: ‘I think it’s wonderful that it’s had a reaction, it is just a hat after all, and now it has got its own Facebook page and so many fans.
'It’s an incredible response to that hat really, I’m glad it provoked so much conversation.’
The Facebook page Princess Beatrice's Hat has accrued over 5,000 fans and many will be delighted by the news that the hat will be up for grabs.
One fan, Rosanna Joy Cattle said: 'Loved these hats. My mother's initial response: "what is that? How dare she wear that thing behind the queen?!"
'I rather like it though, a bit bonkers, but awesome.'
However the Facebook page, titled Princess Beatrice’s Ridiculous Royal Wedding Hat, boasts 136,499 'likes' so far.
And bloggers have wasted no time in poking fun at the fifth in line to the throne’s headgear, creating a host of ‘viral’ mock-up pictures.
The spoofs suggested various uses for the titfer, including a cat flap, a Star Trek stun gun and even a lavatory bowl.
Philip Treacy, who made headwear for a large number of guests including Victoria Beckham, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Zara Phillips has also defended his designs.
He said Beatrice, 22, and her sister Eugenie, 21, looked 'gorgeous and beautiful' at their cousin's high-profile nuptials.
He told HollywoodLife.com: 'My inspiration was beauty and elegance; it's a 21st century royal wedding.
'They didn't tell me what they wanted because I've known them for a long time and I wanted them to look gorgeous and beautiful.'
Brushing off the backlash, he continued: 'They trusted me to make them. Gorgeous and beautiful can be open to interpretation...
'I thought they looked gorgeous and beautiful. But no one is crying if anyone didn't.'
The 43-year-old designer, whose hats have been worn by everybody from Lady Gaga to Sarah-Jessica Parker, typically cost in excess of $1,000.
He explained that his creations were designed to make the wearer 'feel a million dollars'.
'How a hat makes you feel is what a hat is all about,' he said.
'It’s about making you feel a million dollars so when you’ve got something beautiful on your head and the head is the most important part of the body to embellish, because it’s what you meet.
'When you’re wearing something on your head you feel beautiful.'
