Lagerfeld gave a whole new meaning to the phrase "applied mathematics" by working this theme into a fine riff on Italian la dolce vita fifties dressing, right down to the very Anouk Aimée coiffured hair swept upward to such a degree that back in the day it must have needed twice daily trips to the hairdresser to beat the wilting effect of the sun and monumental glasses with blue lenses designed to combat pretty much the very same thing.

Lagerfeld created blouses out of layered panels of men's cotton pin-striped shirting, some with shoulders that had flutterey capped sleeves or precise cutouts, worn with full skirts to just above the knee that fell in graphic folds and pleats - the abstract equation rendered in material form, if you lke. Other times, the math references was as simple as the dots that punctuated the sand suede Lagerfeld used for a soft, loose hooded jacket, or the A-line skirt he topped with a graph-paper check tank. And there was a white cotton fabric embroidered with multicolored circles used for a shirt jacket and cap-sleeved sundress that possessed, despite the elaborateness of the workmanship, a simple and direct charm.
