They have been translated in various ways on the big screen.
But in the new adaptation of Snow White, Mirror Mirror, it seems the Seven Dwarves are there to provide comic relief.
In a new trailer of the upcoming movie, viewers have been treated to their first look at the dwarves, who help out heroine Snow White, played by Lily Collins, in her time of need.
The pretty brunette plays an exiled princess who must seek the help of seven 'resourceful rebels' to protect herself from the villianous queen who has taken control of the kingdom.
The film also stars Sean Bean as The King and Armie Hammer, who catapulted to fame playing the dual role of the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, as handsome Prince Andrew Alcott.
In the new trailer, Snow White is portrayed a feisty character who can hold her own when it comes to sword fighting and trekking through the treacherous winter landscapes.
Despite accusations she is trading off her father's fame, 22-year-old Lily actually embarked on her own career two decades ago with a debut role in BBC series Growing Pains at the tender age of two.
She has since starred as Sandra Bullock's daughter in 2009 production The Blind Side and co-starred with Twilight hunk Taylor Lautner in last year's action film Abduction.
However, sharing the screen with A-lister Roberts will be her biggest role to date.
Speaking of her famous co-star, Lily said: 'She’s playing evil in a way that I don’t think people are going to expect.
'Everyone loves that Julia smile and laugh and she maintains that, but in the film she has this creepy eerie way that you don’t know if you love her or hate her.
'She’s brilliant and it’s been an honour. She’s so nice, she’s so classy, she’s just everything I had hoped she’d be.'
But Lily said the Pretty Woman actress often struggled with her villainous alter-ego on the set.
She added: 'Julia gets to be quite horrible to me. There’s a scene where she pulls my hair and she pulled it so hard that some of it came out!
'But we kept rolling and afterward she was like, "I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry!"'
The adaptation is not to be confused with another new reincarnation, Snow White & The Huntsman.
The other hotly-anticipated version stars Kristen Stewart as the title character, Charlize Theron as the Queen and former Home & Away star Chris Hemsworth (brother of Luke and Liam) as the Prince.
Meanwhile, Hammer, 25, has brought some unwanted attention to himself before the film's release, having been arrested for cannabis possession in Texas last year after he was reportedly found with 0.02 ounces of marijuana, three medicinal marijuana cookies and one brownie in his car.
The actor spent one day in jail before paying a $1,000 bond.
