He might not have found the same success as previous winners Diversity or Susan Boyle, but Jai McDowall has still done well for himself since winning Britain's Got Talent last year.
But in an astonishing new interview Simon Cowell has hit out at last year's victor, admitting he was 'disappointed' that the Scottish singer took home the prize.
Cowell said in an interview with ITV's Daybreak this morning that he was hoping to uncover someone who can be a 'genuine star'.
He said: 'I was disappointed with last year's winner, Jai. You want to find someone who is a star all over the world and who has got a long career.
'With respect to him, he wasn't one of our best ones. He would make a good living in West End theatre and he is talented, but he wasn't what I was looking for.
'You want a Diversity or George Samson or a Susan Boyle, a different kind of artist who makes you feel good about doing the show and who is a genuine star.'
McDowall won last year's competition after beating 12-year-old favourite Ronan Parke in the final of the show and taking home the £100,000 record deal.
McDowall, a disability support worker from the Ayrshire village of Tarbolton, was lost for words, told hosts Ant and Dec at the time: 'I feel absolutely amazing, fantastic... it's so much more.'
McDowall's debut album Believe was released last month under Cowell's record label Syco but only reached number 54 in the UK charts.
Cowell since said it was unlikely McDowall would be releasing another record with the label.
Talking about his plans for this year in a recent interview with Digital Spy, McDowall said: 'I'm going to try and continue to work some more after this album. As I said; if I'm lucky enough to get a second album I want to do some writing.
'I'd love to do a tour of the UK, but also do some shows Stateside as well as I have a lot of American fans on Twitter and Facebook.'
