'Whitney voluntarily entered the programme to support her long-standing recovery process.'

According to TMZ, the programme allows Houston to go out in public - providing she has a monitor.

However, the showbiz website are reporting that the star is seeking help for issues other than drug and alcohol problems.

'She's cleansing herself to get ready for a new movie,' their source told the website.

The movie that is being referred to may be Getting Happy, the sequel to Houston's1995 film Waiting to Exhale.

Angela Bassett, who was part of the Exhale cast, recently revealed that the original cast, including Houston, would be on board for the Forest Whitaker-directed film.

Houston admitted to using drugs during an interview in 2009 with Oprah Winfrey, and she completed a stint in rehab in March 2005.

She launched a comeback in 2009 after battling drug addiction and released I Look To You, her first studio album in seven years which topped the U.S. and charts in other countries.

She has an 18-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown by former husband, R&B singer Bobby Brown.

Bobby Brown has also been to the Betty Ford Centre in 1995 for his own addictions.
