Russell Brand in Miami, Cools Down After the Critics Of Authur

He's been mauled by the critics for his re-imagining of Dudley Moore's Arthur, but Russell Brand refuses to let his spirits be dampened.

Instead the 35-year-old Essex native let it all out with a high octane trip to the beach.

It was presumably a lot more fun to enjoy a few hours jet skiing in Miami with friends today, than to ponder where his performance in the film went wrong.

In fact, the comic hinted he was on fighting form by binding his long hair up into a bun just like a sumo wrestler.

Brand adapted to the action role like a duck to water, and seemed so reinvigorated after tearing through the surf that he happily posed with fans on the beach.

Russell, who is married to singer Katy Perry, 26 , was taking a break from his latest movie, the big screen adaptation of Broadway hit Rock of Ages.

He's joining a stellar cast for the musical extravaganza, so is perhaps relieved not to be carrying a film himself.

The rock sing-a-long has lured the likes of Tom Cruise, Amy Adams, Alec Baldwin, Mark J Blige and Catherine Zeta Jones.

It's also more comfortable territory for Brand, who has excelled in the role of rocker Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek.

But the often controversial comic never really had a chance to fill the tiny footprints of the legendary Moore, who made the role his own in 1981.

The Daily Mail's Chris Tookey said in his review of Brand's latest movie: 'Pathos is well beyond Brand, so he settles instead for toe-curling whimsy, which he can’t manage either: he’s far too edgy to carry it off.

'Dudley Moore made Arthur into a lovable drunk. Russell Brand turns him into an aggressively whimsical egomaniac. No wonder no one likes him.'

And Brand is obviously assessing his strengths at the moment, having taken to Twitter to ask for suggestions about venues he could use for stand up in LA.

He tweeted: 'Where can I do stand up in LA please? A bit folky and lo fi where food is not served and people are gentle? Much love.'

Elsewhere, singer/songwriter Christopher Cross says he's refusing to watch the Arthur remake because he hates the idea of Brand recreating the role made famous by his late pal Dudley Moore.

Cross recorded the theme to the classic and was upset when he heard of remake plans.

He told BlogTalkRadio.com: 'Dudley is Arthur and that's it. Russell Brand is a talented guy but Dudley created the character and he's gone.'

'I haven't seen it and I'm not really interested in seeing it because I'm from the era that connects to Dudley.'

Cross even refused to let the film's producers use his song Best That You Can Do, which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach and Carol Bayer Sager.

He said: 'They asked us if they could use the song, which we didn't let them do. They did re-record it with somebody else.'
